Our Interview Process
The interview process at SeeByte varies role to role, but here is an overview of what you can expect:
CV Review
Your CV will always be reviewed by an individual at SeeByte. We don’t use AI or automated screening in our selection process.
Pre-Screen Call(s)
Following successful CV review, you will be asked to attend one or two pre-screen calls via teams. The calls will run through the following:
- Your key skills and experience relevant to the role
- Your motivations and aspirations, salary expectations and notice period
- The working patterns and policies at SeeByte
- Compulsory Nationality, Eligibility and Security questions
- A behavioural competency question
Online Assessment (for Engineering roles)
Following a successful pre-screen, for engineering roles, we will ask you to complete an online technical assessment via Codility. Full details and instructions will be sent to you via email.
Interview
Most face-to-face interviews take place at the Edinburgh office. For Bristol based roles, SeeByte will organise travel, and accommodation if necessary, to attend an interview in Edinburgh. In some cases, interviews for Bristol based roles will take place in the Bristol office.
SeeByte conducts competency-based interviews. At interview, you will be assessed on the key SeeByte functional or technical skills for the role and level, and the key SeeByte behavioural skills for the role and level. You will be offered up a preparation call before the face-to-face interview and will also receive a full confirmation email with all the details you need.

Answering Behavioural Competency Questions – Best Practices
- Be prepared - Spend time preparing in advance of the interview. You should know in advanced the behaviours that are going to be assessed at interview. It is definitely worth spending time thinking about real life examples where you have demonstrated these behaviours.
- Use the STAR method – the best way to structure your answers is using the STAR method – Situation, Task, Action, Result
- Be specific – provide real-life examples and enough detail in your answer to fully demonstrate your skills and impact. Avoid vague language.
- Stay focused – Keep your answer relevant to the question. Try to avoid speaking for too long. It is better to give a concise answer and the interviewer will ask clarifying questions if they need more information.
- Use data – ensure your answer gets to the data/evidence. What was the actual outcome or result? Explain it in detail using data to back this up.
- Focus on your personal achievements, skills, experiences – use ‘I’ instead of ‘we’. It is absolutely fine to set the scene and talk about your role as part of a team, but the interviewers need to know what you personally did.
- Take your time – SeeByte interviewers want you to be successful and do your best. Take your time to make sure you use the best example for the question being asked. You are welcome to bring notes into the interview and refer to them if you would like.
- Be relevant – try and use examples from the last 3 – 5 years if at all possible. If you are a recent or soon-to-be graduate, feel free to use examples solely from your studies or any part time jobs you have held.
-
Technical Interviewing – Best Practices
If you are interviewing for an Engineering role, here are some best practices to help you prepare:
- For the vast majority of our engineering roles, familiarity with C# or C++ is generally a prerequisite for success. If you have not been working in these programming languages recently, it is definitely worth spending time brushing up on the basics before the interview.
- Remember to ask clarifying questions to fully understand the requirements of any problem or scenario, before you start to do any coding.
- After you’ve gathered qualifying requirements, write maintainable, readable, reusable, and understandable code with clear functionality and descriptive names.
- Translate qualifying requirements into clean written code, checking edge cases and providing usage examples.
- Be ready to write code/lay out a systems design in real-time at the face-to-face interview. You will be given the technical exercise and will then be left for a period of time to work on this by yourself. The interviewers will then return and discuss.
-
Systems Design – Best Practices
- Manage your allotted time carefully, leave appropriate time to consider the design exercise.
- Read the exercise question and make sure your solution answers what has been asked of you.
- Ask any clarification questions before you start the exercise.
- Do not over complicate your solution.
- Be prepared to answer questions on your design and challenged on certain aspects.
- Where appropriate, use functions, classes, and inheritance to break the solution into logical components.
